Here are some of the things which have helped me as I went through training as a yoga teacher:
1. Make space for it
200 hour yoga teacher training is - as its name suggests - a whole lot of hours worth of time, energy, focus mental and physical activity. And that is not accounting for self-practice and homework!
Make sure you have time, physical and mental space to fit your training into your life.
2. Get the right equipment
If you haven't already, now is the time to invest into a fancy, sexy mat. It's also time to get your own props - blocks, bricks, belts, bolsters. Not only will this be a requirement in most courses, but if you are serious about investing so much time and money into training, you might as well make sure you have quality, reliable equipment to support you through it.
3. Get familiar with the material
A lot of courses will share the curriculum ahead of time, and where relevant, a mandatory or suggested reading list. Get familiar with the material ahead of time, this will save you time and head space as the course progresses.
4. Let people know!
From the moment you have signed up to the course, let the whole world know about it! First of all, you will need guinea pigs as you go through training to practice your new skills on, starting to gather interest early on will make scheduling later on that much easier.
Most importantly, thinking long term, you never know who may be able to help in your yoga journey - maybe your workplace is interested in classes? Maybe someone has online presence to help boost your own profile in some way? Maybe someone has a space you can use to conduct classes? Maybe someone can help you with taking professional yoga pictures? Maybe someone knows someone who can help!
5. Prepare physically
Teacher training will include a lot of physical practice, and most courses will require that you keep up a near-daily self-practice. In the months leading up to the start of the course, nurture your practice so that you are at the top of your form to follow the training. I should specify that this does not mean pushing yourself to your limits and risking injury - always be mindful of where the body is!
Yoga teacher training can be an incredible experience - at least it was for me! - and making sure you prepare for it adequately will put the best chances on your side!
